Abracadabra
by Mike Wagner

Wouldn't it be great to be able to wave a magic wand, mutter an incantation, and create a fully-engaged workforce? Unfortunately, it’s not quite that easy – but it is possible.

In the mid-90s I was working at Saturn – a place that knew how to get me completely involved in the work. How did they do it? Here are five employee engagement lessons I learned during my tenure at Saturn...

Brand Challenge:
Are all your employees engaged in delivering on your organization's brand?

Challenge: Jumpstart your employees' behavior and attitude by encouraging them to "get fired". Select a group of employees to:

  • Agree upon a challenge based on improving your customers' experience with your organization.
  • Come up with 6 to 10 "wacky, outrageous, get yourself fired" ideas.
  • Select 2 or 3 ideas to tone down into workable solutions.

This is a fun and non-threatening way to re-energize and engage employees in contributing to the solution of a legitimate issue in your organization.

Ask the Rabbit
Q: White Rabbit Group talks a lot about the importance of engaged employees. We have several young, new hires - so what's the best way for me to engage these millennial generation employees?
A:
What inspires millennials to contribute their time, talent, and creative energy is what inspires all generations - a crystal-clear focus on what success looks like at your company and how they personally make a difference in fulfilling that goal.

When conducting client team-building sessions we often ask participants to recall the last time they were fully engaged in a project. It could be a sports team, a church bake sale, a military exercise, etc. Regardless of the task, or generation, the common theme is a clear understanding of the desired outcome, what is expected of them, and how they contribute to the success of the event.

There will always be generational differences within a workforce. Understanding those differences is valuable, but spending an inordinate amount of time on this "problem" treats only the symptom and not the cause. To engage everyone in your organization, clearly define success for your organization and how each employee directly contributes.
