On-The-Court
Leadership
by Mike Wagner
When
recently attending my first-grade grandson's basketball
game, I was shocked to see
the coaches on the court with their players - during
the game.
This is markedly different from how I learned the game
and I quickly realized this change was a good one. The
coach's ability to give the players quick feedback and
keep them focused on the goal greatly accelerated the
first-graders development and understanding of the game.
It is really very similar to leading a business... Read

Brand
Challenge:
Are YOU the barrier to your success?
How your organization is structured
has a big implication on your ability to grow. Many
organizations start out by growing organically - with
little thought on the best way to deliver a consistent
brand experience to customers. Threfore they "hit
a ceiling" which inhibits their ability to grow.
Challenge: Start taking proactive steps to avoid this
ceiling by being brutally honest in answering the following
questions:
- If
you could start from scratch, how would you organize
your company to consistently deliver your preferred
brand experience?
- What
key leadership roles are necessary to drive your organization
forward?
- Are
the right people in the right position to maximize
the talent in your company?
Knowing
the brand experience you need to deliver to your customers
and structuring your organization to consistently deliver
that experience will help you break through your self-imposed
barriers to success.
Ask
the Rabbit
Q: Contrary
to the popular saying, is it possible to "make"
a leader?
A:
While the popular school
of thought is that leaders are born and not made, there
are more leaders in your organization than you think.
One of the most important elements of any great leader
is a crystal-clear vision of the outcome, the end game,
what success looks like, the ultimate goal. We're often
asked if we conduct leadership training. After replying
in the affirmative, we inquire exactly what these leadership
trainees will be leading their people toward. The silence
on the other end of the phone is deafening.
Defining success starts by knowing your sweet-spot customer
and the promises you make to them. This gives everyone
in your organization a focal point around which to make
business decisions, structure their work, and lead their
employees. Once everyone is aware what it takes to "win"
you'll be surprised how many teachable leaders you already
have on staff.
