From Hoping to Knowing
by Steve Vaught

Leadership Challenge:
Are you teaching your organization to navigate Moments of Truth?

You may know Moments of Truth by another name: "fires". As a leader, you feel it's your job to step in and put out the fires. You may even see yourself as the chief firefighter. To create a truly remarkable organization, you need to develop a team who can recognize Moments of Truth and navigate the correct course of action. Each Moment of Truth delivers a customer experience which strengthens or weakens your relationship with them.

Start teaching your organization to navigate Moments of Truth by trying this at your next meeting:

  • Identify a recurring Moment of Truth in your organization.
  • Clearly describe the situation so everyone understands why it is a Moment of Truth.
  • Ask your team to come up with possible courses of action to navigate the situation. Do not provide your answer and challenge their thinking only if they are really off course.

Teaching your team to properly navigate Moments of Truth grows their capacity and allows you to relinquish your job as chief firefighter and assume your role as leader.
