From Working-Managers to Leaders
by Mike Wagner

There's a realization all of our clients come to at some point during our working relationship: It's not enough to simply have a team of working-managers.

Working-managers started out as just workers. They did it very well - so well, they were promoted. They're still doing the work, but now manage others who also do the work.

To take the organization to the next level you must have more than working-managers - you need leaders. That's when the rules change. That's when you begin to expect your managers to grow the capacity of every employee, mature them, guide them, deepen their commitment to...

Leadership Challenge:
Who should NOT buy your products/services?

Many companies fool themselves by thinking their products/services are for everyone. In reality, everyone is not your customer - unless you want to be a commodity.

To differentiate your organization you must not only be crystal-clear on your Right Customer, but also on who shouldn't be your customer. At your next leadership meeting, pose this question:

  • For whom are our products/services not designed?

Knowing for who your products are not intended, and why, makes it easier to point out how you differ from your competitors and highlights your value in the marketplace.

Ask the Rabbit
Q: Every fall our leadership team goes on a two-day retreat to work on our strategic plan. We've done the same thing for years, nothing ever comes from it, and I actually dread it. Any suggestions?

A: I'm going to answer your question with three questions:

Why are you having the meeting?
Actually, this can be asked of any meeting you hold. Start with a goal in mind and gear the meeting to accomplish that goal. The worst reason to hold a meeting is because "we've always done it this way."

Who leads the meeting?
If you are running the meeting, you don't get to participate. You're too involved with the agenda and capturing ideas to actually add to the discussion. Consider an outside facilitator to free you from this task. A skilled facilitator, a fresh set of eyes, and a new face can bring new energy to this important meeting.

What happens after the meeting?

If there's no accountability at the conclusion of a meeting, it may have been a pleasant experience, but it was a waste of time. Remember your end goal and walk out of the room with each person accountable for clear, attainable, action items.

When goals are accomplished and things get done, meetings stop being a waste of valuable time and you stop dreading them as well.

The marketplace is complex and fraught with a change rate that is greater than our ability to absorb it. We unknowingly nurture complexity by working within that broken system and "tweaking" our way to success.

White Rabbit Group CEO, Mike Wagner, analyzes the current marketplace and reveals what great leaders do for their organizations in an age of complexity.

Innovation is Always About Copies and Remixes
Kirby Ferguson

Copying and remixing is usually thought to be cheating - the lazy way to create something "new".

In this short article and video found in FastCompany, Kirby Ferguson maintains the breakthroughs from our most honored inventors are simply iterations of existing ideas and works.

The video gives several examples of iterative work and focuses on the development of the personal computer from its origins to what we use today.

It's an interesting theory that will have you looking at creativity in a new way - and perhaps giving "copying and remixing" a break.
